La Serena in Chile

The city of La Serena in Chile is located approximately 500km from the capital city, Santiago.  One of the most natural and magical places close to La Serena in Chile is Elqui Valley (in Spanish) Valle de Elqui, Isla Damas, Punta Chorros or famous museum of John Paul II in the neighbour town, Coquimbo.

La Serena is Chile’s second-oldest city with many interesting recreational attractions to offer as cultural concerts, architectural colonial buildings or nice and long beach.

How to get to La Serena?

There are a few options how to travel to La Serena.

BUS

The easiest way to travel to La Serena is to take bus from Santiago de Chile with Turbus or Pullman bus. The journey takes approximately 5-6 hours from the capital city Santiago.

PLANE

The fastest way to get to La Serena is to take a plane from Santiago de Chile to La Serena. The plane takes less that 1 hour to La Serena.

CAR

You can rent a car and be more independent from the public transport.

What to do around La Serena in Chile?

ISLA DAMAS

One of the must see places in the IV Region of La Serena Isla Damas (Women’s beach) and the Pingüino de Humboldt National Reserve.

There are only 3 islands in the Humboldt National Reserve but visitors are only allowed on Isla Damas.

On the Island there are 2 beautiful white sand beaches with clear turquoise water: La Poza and Las Tijeras.

Isla Damas is part of Chile’s Humboldt Penguin National Reserve.

Up to 80% of the world’s population of Humboldt penguins are found in Humboldt National Reserve.

It is estimated that there are 31 Humboldt penguins on Isla Damas, over 4000 on Isla Choros, and even more on Isla Chañaral.

How to get to Isla Damas?

The easiest way for solo traveller is to take a bus from La Serena, the Street Francisco Aguirre to Punta Chorros. It is small fishing village and your starting point to Isla Damas.

From here in Punta Chorros you will take a boat to Isla Damas.

The journey takes approximately 50 minutes to get to the Isla Damas.

On the Island you will see penguins, sea lions ad many beautiful varieties of birds. There is a big possibility to see families of dolphins jumping out of the water. You might be lucky enough to also see whales on your way to the Isla Damas.

From Punta Chorros to  Isla Damas, logistics

Once arriving to the fishing village, Punta Chorros, you have to take a boat with local guide.

In Punta Chorros little fishing harbour, get a ticket entrance for 10.000CLP to  Reserva Nacional Pinguino de Humboldt.

Travelling from La Serena to Punta Chorros

On your way to Punta Chorros, approximately 114 kilometres Northwest of La Serena, you will drive on the Panamericana.

Before you get to Punta de Choros and you will admire real natural wonders on the way, unique animals as foxes, guanacos, donkeys and many other.

The way between La Serena and Punta Chorros is really beautiful and unique. Only here you can admire wild animals close to the highway but also natural wonders as likes and mountains.

Coquimbo

The coastline town only 12 kilometres from  La Serena.

Coquimbo is famous for its long beaches and the harbour. According to the history of the Region Coquimbo, the city was attacked by the pirates.

Cross of the Third Millennium

Nowadays, in the centre of Coquimbo is located of the highest symbols in the South America: famous Cross of the Third Millennium that represents Christian culture.

Nearby the Third Millennium Cross, there is a Mosque that speak for the Islamic culture which gives outstanding contrast in the city.

Get to Barrio Inglés and catch up with friends and locals

Barrio Inglés (English Neighbourhood) is the meeting point in Coquimbo. There are all of the bars, pubs, discos and restaurants to spend nice time and forget about daily routine.
